MUSIC

Music is a gift of God! At TLO we focus on the enjoyment of music and understanding how to create it. K-8th grades are grouped in a choir and have music twice a week. They also share their talents in worship services and school concerts. Every year elementary and middle school students switch off in learning and performing a musical. Read below for more info on each grade level.

KINDERGARTEN
Throughout the year, students learn music through listening, singing, movement, and simple rhythm instruments. Music in kindergarten places an emphasis on how our bodies can create music.
1ST & 2ND GRADE
Music class continues to enhance students' understanding of how we can create music. Throughout the year students continue to learn the basic concepts of music through listening, singing, movement, rhythm instruments, and other hands-on activities.
3RD & 4TH GRADE
Students continue to learn about how we can create music through singing, movement, and rhythm instruments, and other hands on activities. Students understanding of music is furthered in these years with the addition of more instruments such as the recorder in 4th grade.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
5th-8th graders grow musically as a group, learning singing techniques and music reading skills. The students are divided into four parts through voice checks conducted at the beginning of the year.

Starting in 5th grade, students also have an opportunity to pick a dedicated instrument and join band. Band students receive private and/or small group lessons during the week as well as participating in a full band rehearsal. This is in addition to choir practices, in which all 5th-8th grade participate.

7th and 8th grade students also learn the handbells, studying basic handbell techniques through sacred and secular music selections
