OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Student Life 5.jpg

Trinity Lone Oak has been blessed to own a parcel of land next to the playground that has been designated by Minnesota's DNR (Department of Natural Resources) as a School Forest.  Students use the space in every season for any subject area.

How do we use the forest for learning?
In any given week, one might find pre-algebra students using proportions to measure tree heights, first graders examining and identifying leaves, fourth graders writing creatively about the sounds of autumn, eighth graders conducting biological plot studies, or preschoolers having treasure hunts. Chapel services may also be conducted in the forest in the worship area (created by an alumni of TLO for an Eagle Scout project.)
Do we use the forest for any other activities?
Yes!
As unusual as it might seem our cross country team uses the forest paths during meets. A race is 1 mile for the younger competitors, and 2 miles for the older runners. This takes the kids around our soccer field and through the forest. It adds quite a different dynamic to our meets, one that is fun and challenging.

Students also love to use the area at the edge of the forest to build forts during recess. They often work together in small groups, learning through play many concepts such as teamwork, problem solving, and spatial awareness.
Who maintains the school forest?
Currently our 1st grade teacher Mrs. Zenda-Johnson oversees the preservation of the forest, including managing when it is time to weed and when the paths need maintenance. We are so grateful for the volunteers who dedicate time to any upkeep our forest needs. These volunteers can be found throughout our TLO family - teachers, staff, students, their parents and family members, and church members.
